Does Refinishing Decrease Its Value?
The finish on a piece of furniture is there to protect the wood surface against damage, in addition to enhancing the beauty of the piece. If an item lacks a good finish, the surrounding environment can adversely affect the wood. This then begs the question of, does antique furniture refinishing devalue the item in question?
The short answer is NO, refinishing a piece of furniture does NOT decrease the piece’s value, however, there are a few circumstances that do need to be considered.
Is your furniture the first of its kind? Is it considered a period piece?
A good example is a federal secretary cabinet that was made in the late 1700s. However, please note that just because an item is an antique, which is usually considered over 100 years old, it doesn’t necessarily make it a period piece.
Instead of refinishing a period piece, consider preserving it to stop any further damage. Another option will be to restore the period piece, just remember to carefully document the steps that are taken so the methods can be reversed if needs be. For instance, if a veneer piece has jagged edges, you can use a fill that is easily removed at a later date, meaning it will not permanently affect your furniture piece or the historical significance.
Was the piece once owned by a significant person or from a historical location?
For example, refinishing an item that was owned by Thomas Jefferson, Amelia Earhart, or in a Norman Rockwell painting, must be addressed on a case by case basis, and handled with great care, in other words, no DIY methods should ever be used.
Did a notable cabinetmaker or craftsman make the piece?
In cases such as these, you should consider restoring the piece instead of refinishing it. Meaning, the old finish should never be removed but cleaned, waxed, or even top coated. Retaining the original finish is vital to maintaining the value of the piece.
